Auburn Falls In Game One Of Sunday Doubleheader, 6-4
AUBURN, Ala. – Dane Opel homered twice and drove in four runs for Missouri as the Auburn baseball team dropped the first game of its Sunday doubleheader, 6-4, at Plainsman Park. The loss evened both team’s records at 1-1 on the young season.
Slade Smith (0-1) took the loss for Auburn, allowing five runs on nine hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings while Jeff Emens (1-0) got the win for Missouri out of the bullpen.
Jake Walsh earned his first save of the season for Missouri.
Five different hitters had multiple hits for Auburn, which finished the game with 13 hits and six walks but stranded 16 runners on base.
Cullen Wacker drove in two runs with a pinch-hit double in the fourth that narrowed the gap to 4-3 but that was as close as Auburn would get after trailing 4-0 after Missouri batted in the third.
Down 6-3 in the ninth, Blake Austin drove in a run with a double to left. Auburn then loaded the bases when Bobby Andrews was hit by a pitch but that was all for Auburn as Walsh finished the game off with a strike out.

Alabama Baseball Falls to Florida Atlantic on Sunday, 9-4
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama baseball team dropped a 9-4 decision to the Florida Atlantic Owls on Sunday afternoon at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. With the loss the Crimson Tide falls to 0-3 on the season while FAU improves to 3-0.
“Give a lot of credit to Florida Atlantic, they played tremendously all weekend. They really exposed a lot of areas that we have to get cleared up,” UA head coach Mitch Gaspard said. “We just had too many errors at critical times. I thought pitching-wise we had the same sort of problem. We have to make big pitches at the right time.”
UA junior second baseman Kenny Roberts finished the day 1-for-4 with three RBI, including a three-run home run in the fifth inning, the first of his Alabama career and the first round tripper on the year for the Tide. Freshman right fielder Ben Moore tallied a pair of hits and runs on the day, finishing 2-for-3, while senior shortstop Jared Reaves also collected a pair of hits.
Alabama trailed 5-4 heading into the final four innings following Roberts’ home run, but could not muster anymore runs for the remainder of the game. FAU added one in the seventh and three more in the eighth to earn the victory and series sweep.
In his first start for UA, freshman lefty Justin Kamplain (0-1) lasted three innings, surrendering four runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out four batters.
R.J. Alvarez (1-0) earned the victory for the Owls, pitching three scoreless innings of relief while allowing just one hit, striking out two and walking one. FAU right fielder Alex Hudak added a pair of home runs and five RBI to power an Owl offense that totaled nine runs and 16 hits on the day.
“The offensive end was the most surprising to me,” Gaspard said. “We’ve been pretty good offensively through the fall and early spring. Our offense just didn’t show up today, nor did it show Friday or Saturday. We have a lot of work to do this week
Florida Atlantic got on the board in the top of the first inning with a two-out, two-run home run by Hudak. The Owls notched two more runs, both unearned, in the second inning to make the score 4-0 before Alabama was able to respond in the third inning.
Moore ripped a one-out double to right field, advanced to third on a fielder’s choice and scored on a single by senior center fielder Taylor Dugas, cutting the score to 4-1.
FAU added a run in the top of the fifth to push their lead to 5-1 before the Tide exploded for three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Moore led off with a single, advanced to second on a balk and then was joined on the base paths by senior infielder James Tullidge who walked. After Dugas struck out to record the first out of the inning, Roberts ripped a three-run home run over the wall in left, recording the first home run of his Alabama career while cutting the score to 5-4.
The Owls tacked on a run in the seventh before adding three more in the eighth on the strength of Hudak’s second home run of the day, a three-run shot over the wall in right field.

Bulldogs Shutout PC To Complete Sweep
Athens, Ga. ---The 11th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs blanked Presbyterian 11-0 Sunday, completing a three-game sweep at Foley Field.
Redshirt freshman Taylor Hicks made a fine debut, pitching four scoreless innings for the victory in a planned staff day as the Bulldogs improved to 3-0. Freshman David Sosebee, senior Chase Hawkins, junior Jesse Scott and redshirt freshman Jay Swinford combined to throw the final five frames and allowed just a pair of hits. The Bulldogs collected 12 hits on the afternoon including big days from seniors Levi Hyams (3-for-4, 2 RBI) and Colby May (2-for-3, 2 RBI).
After facing two batters, Presbyterian pitcher Steven Richardson was struck by a line drive off of the bat of junior Kyle Farmer. While he recorded an out on the play, he was unable to continue and was replaced by Matt Nodelman as the Blue Hose (0-3) ended up using eight pitchers on the day.
Georgia struck early with a four-run first. After Peter Verdin was hit by a pitch, and Conor Welton followed with a single, Hyams smacked a double to right field scoring both Verdin and Welton. May knocked in Hyams on a single to center and advanced to second base courtesy of a throwing error which scored Hyams. May also had an incredible defensive performance with 10 putouts including a couple diving catches.
The Bulldogs would add insurance runs over the next three innings to build an 8-0 lead by the fourth. In the second, junior Curt Powell led off with a double to left field and later scored on a Welton RBI. In the third, a leadoff walk by Hyams sparked another outburst. A single by May scored Hyams. After moving to second when Brett DeLoach was hit-by-pitch, May plated the seventh run of the game with help from a deep fly-out by Powell.
In a rain delayed 7th, the Bulldogs hammered three more runs across the plate. After singles by Hyams and senior Jonathan Hester, freshman Heath Holder knocked in a run in his first career at-bat. Freshman pinch hitter Nelson Ward followed and knocked in the final runs giving the Bulldogs an 11-0 lead.
"We carried some momentum into today's game after Saturday and had a much better approach at the plate," said Georgia coach David Perno. "I thought Taylor (Hicks) was solid, he threw strikes and we played great defense again. It was unfortunate that Presbyterian's starter got hurt on the 3rd batter of the game, and I know that messed up their pitching plans for the day. I like the way our team pulls for each other; we've got fine leadership from our veterans. We got clutch hits this weekend and took care of the baseball."

TIGERS POST 4-0 VICTORY OVER AIR FORCE TO IMPROVE TO 3-0
BATON ROUGE, La.— Eighth-ranked LSU (3-0) picked up its second shutout of the new season Sunday, defeating Air Force, 4-0, in Alex Box Stadium.
The Tigers outscored their opponents, 33-2, in earning three wins over the opening weekend of the season. In addition to Sunday’s victory, LSU defeated Air Force 10-2 on Friday and the Tigers blanked Alcorn State 19-0 on Saturday.
Air Force, which defeated Alcorn State, 6-1, earlier Sunday, dropped to 1-3 on the season with the loss to LSU.
Kurt McCune (1-0) provided the Tigers with six solid innings of scoreless baseball to earn the win Sunday. The sophomore right-hander punched out four, allowed three hits and walked one on a brisk afternoon. McCune retired the side in three of his six innings of work.
“I thought Kurt McCune was tremendous today,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “He has such great locations on his pitches, and it always seems he can throw exactly where he wants to. That’s the secret to his success.”
Freshman Aaron Nola and sophomore Nick Rumbelow combined to shut the door on the Falcon’s comeback hopes. Nola fired two scoreless frames and struck out two. Rumbelow worked himself out of bases-loaded ninth inning jam to protect the victory.
LSU posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time since April 2008, when the Tigers blanked Centenary and Alabama in consecutive outings.
“It’s tough to lose a game when the other team doesn’t score any runs,” Mainieri said. “Everyone who took the mound for us over the weekend really did an outstanding job. Overall, I think we played well in all three games; there are always areas in which we can improve but I can’t find too much fault with the way our players performed.”
The LSU offense chased Air Force starter Michael Ceci Sunday after four innings. The lefty gave up three runs, two earned, five hits and two walks and struck out two.
Tyler Moore drove in two runs on a fourth inning single and Jackson Slaid provided three hits and an RBI single.
Mason Katz led off the bottom of the fourth with a hotshot single to left. He moved to second on Slaid’s single to right. JaCoby Jones stepped up and crushed a ball that was tracked down in center, and Katz moved to third.
Austin Nola hit a dribbler back to the pitcher who appeared to have Katz caught in a rundown. Katz evaded the tag and reached third safely. Nola was safe at first and Slaid moved to second.
Moore ripped a liner into center that plated Katz and Slaid, and moved Nola to third. Moore proceeded to steal second and the throw from the catcher was off target and into centerfield. Nola jogged home to give LSU the 3-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth, right fielder Raph Rhymes made a spectacular diving catch that brought Tiger fans to their feet.
The Tigers threatened in the bottom of the sixth, but could not garner another run. Nola drew a two-out walk and then reached third after the catcher’s throw sailed into center. Moore made contact and was thrown out at first to end the threat.
Moore showed quick reflexes in the top of the seventh. Air Force’s Taylor Ausbun attempted to surprise the Tigers with a bunt attempt, only to pop it up high in to the air behind the plate. Moore quickly turned around, found the ball and made a leaping catch for the second out of the inning. Aaron Nola registered the third out on a strike out.
LSU reached Air Force reliever Todd Del Toro in the top of the eighth. Rhymes led off with a hot shot single to left field and moved to second on a wild pitch. Slaid smashed a single in front of the center fielder and scored Rhymes to give LSU an insurance run.

No. 4 Arkansas completes sweep with 17-1 win
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The fourth-ranked Arkansas Razorback baseball team completed a season-opening three-game sweep of Villanova with a 17-1 win in eight innings on Sunday afternoon at Baum Stadium.
The Razorbacks improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Wildcats are now 0-3.
Due to Villanova’s travel schedule, the game was halted at 4:15 p.m. with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
For the series, Arkansas put up 41 runs, scoring double figures in each game. The 41 runs are the most through the first three games of a season since the 1997 season when Arkansas scored 60 runs in its first three games.
While the bats closed the weekend on a strong note, so did the Arkansas pitching staff as four different pitchers combined to allow just one run.
Starter Barrett Astin earned the win, throwing five no-hit innings and striking out seven, while also issuing three walks. Astin opened the game by retiring the first seven batters he faced and closed his outing by sitting down seven of the last eight batters that came to the plate.
Trent Daniel and Michael Gunn each had scoreless appearances out of the bullpen. Daniel tossed a shutout inning, giving up two hits, while Gunn struck out two and allowed one hit in 1.2 innings.
Dominic Ficociello, Jacob Mahan and Matt Reynolds each had three hits to pace Arkansas at the plate. Mahan drove in three runs and scored twice, while Ficociello and Reynolds each added two RBI. Bo Bigham and Jake Wise each contributed a pair of hits. Bigham drove in two runs and scored three times, while Wise homered, drove in two runs and scored four times.
Sam Bates continued his strong start to the season, hitting his second home run and driving in two runs. Bates finished the weekend hitting .556 with a pair of homers, nine RBI and three runs scored.
Villanova starter Max Almonte suffered the loss. Almonte surrendered seven runs, six earned, on six hits in two innings.
Matt Fleishman, Andrew Geenen, Connor Jones and Jordan Zech each had one hit for the Wildcats, while Marlon Calbi added a RBI.
Arkansas grabbed the early lead with four runs in the bottom of the first. Bigham laced the first pitch of the inning up the middle for a single and then stole second base. An opposite field single to left field by Mahan drove in Bigham for the game’s first run. Ficociello then reached first on a bunt single to third. The third baseman’s throw to first was wild, allowing Ficociello to move up to second and Mahan to third. The second baseman then threw wild to home, which allowed Mahan to score and Ficociello to go to third. Bates then cranked his second home run of the weekend, a two-run blast just to the right of the batter’s eye in center field to put the Razorbacks in front 4-0.
Arkansas added another run in the bottom of the second. Bigham reached on a throwing error by the third baseman to begin the inning and then moved to second on a throwing error by the pitcher on a pickoff attempt. Ficociello brought home Bigham with a single to right-center field for the fifth run of the game.
The Razorbacks continued to score in the bottom of the third, plating three runs. Matt Vinson drew a leadoff walk and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Back-to-back walks to Wise and Morris loaded the bases with nobody out. Carve then drew a five-pitch walk to score Vinson. Bigham drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center field. An RBI single by Mahan to right field closed the scoring in the inning.
Arkansas tallied six more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Reynolds doubled to left to start the frame and then stole third. After a strikeout by Vinson, Wise walked and Morris was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A sacrifice fly to center field by Carver scored Reynolds. Bigham, Mahan and Ficociello each drove in a run with three consecutive singles. After Bates was hit by a pitch, Reynolds added his second hit of the inning, driving in two runs.
The Razorbacks scored once in the home half of the fifth. Wise doubled on a misjudged pop up by the third baseman to start the inning and then scored on a RBI single to center by Conor Costello.
Villanova got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Calbi hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Adam Nelson.
Arkansas closed the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the eighth, the final half inning of the day. With two out, Joe Serrano was hit by a pitch. Wise then launched a home run over the bullpen in left field for a two-run blast to make the final score 17-1.

Auburn Drops Game Two Of Doubleheader, 4-3
AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn allowed three runs in the final inning in a game that was called after seven innings due to Missouri’s travel plans and fell 4-3 in the second game of a Sunday afternoon doubleheader at Plainsman Park. The loss dropped Auburn’s record to 1-2 on the season while Missouri is 2-1.
Auburn’s pitching staff, which had been solid for the six innings behind freshman Daniel Koger and senior Justin Bryant, faltered in the seventh, issuing four walks and allowing a bunt base hit (along with an error on the play) and two sac flies to turn a 3-1 lead into a 4-3 deficit. The four walks were more than half of what Koger and Bryant allowed in the first six combined (three).
“We did some things in that inning that aren’t going to help you win a ballgame,” Auburn Head Coach John Pawlowski said. “You walk four guys and you make a mistake defensively; when it’s a close game like this where one run, one pitch or one play could mean the difference, we certainly came up on the short end.”
The three-run seventh made a winner out of Missouri’s Dusty Ross (1-0), who threw 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief behind starter Jeff Cline. After entering and allowing a one-out double to Blake Austin, Jake Walsh got the final two outs to pick up his second save of the day.
Zach Blatt (0-1) took the loss for Auburn, allowing two runs on a hit and a walk in the seventh.
Austin finished the game 2-for-3 with two doubles, a run scored and a RBI and now has four doubles on the year.
“We had two games that we could have won,” Austin said. “There are little plays we need to clean up but we’ll keep swinging and we’ll keep having fun out there.”
Jay Gonzalez was 1-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and a RBI while Garrett Cooper was 1-for-3 with a RBI. Gonzalez also had two steals in the game to up his season total to four.
Koger threw five innings and allowed an unearned run on five hits and three walks, striking out five.
Cline allowed all three of Auburn’s runs in 4 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and two walks without recording a strike out.
Auburn lost 6-4 in the first game of the doubleheader as Dane Opel drove in four runs for Missouri, hitting a pair of home runs in the game.

Dores drop third straight at Stanford
Palo Alto, Calif. – Vanderbilt dropped the team’s third straight game at third-ranked Stanford Sunday with an 18-5 loss.
The Commodores claimed the team’s first lead of the weekend in the second inning sending nine men to the plate and scoring four runs. Connor Harrell’s double ignited the rally with Riley Reynolds’ double scoring Harrell. Jack Lupo drove in a run with his first hit of the season in his first start. Tony Kemp followed with a run-scoring groundout and Anthony Gomez’s single capped the rally. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Cardinal responded with eight runs in the bottom of the second to claim the lead. For the third straight day the Dores defense failed with the team committing four errors in the second and five on the day. VU made 11 errors over the three games against Stanford. The Cardinal offense again exploded in the sixth inning scoring seven runs. Stephen Piscotty led the way for the Cardinal offense driving in seven runs, including a grand slam in the sixth. Anthony Gomez paced the VU offense with two hits and two RBI.
Stanford reliever John Hochstatter earned the win, tossing 6.1 no-hit innings. The southpaw fanned two and walked two in the win. Vanderbilt starter Sam Selman took the loss giving up 12 runs, six earned, on eight hits over five-plus innings.
Several Commodores made their Vanderbilt debut with freshmen Will Cooper, Connor Castellano and John Norwood joining D.J. Luna and Drew VerHagen on the field in the black and gold for the first time. Cooper picked up his first collegiate hit, legging out an infield single in the ninth before coming around to score on Gomez’s single up the middle.

MSU BASEBALL SUFFERS EXTRA-INING LOSS
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Tommy Richards’ two-run single in the top half of the 13th inning lifted the Washington State Cougars to a 6-5 win over Mississippi State in the opening game of a college baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field.
The MSU pitching staff posted 19 strikeouts and threw eight straight scoreless innings before Richards touched Caleb Reed in the top half of the 13th inning. In the home half of the inning, the Maroon and White got a single by Brent Brownlee, double by Adam Frazier and RBI-groundout by Daryl Norris. However, Frazier was stranded a third base when the contest was complete.
For MSU, it was the Bulldogs’ longest game since a 4-1 17-inning win over Ole Miss on April 29, 2007. MSU only played one extra-inning contest a season ago – a 10-inning defeat at Alabama.
Reed (0-1) was masterful in relief. The MSU closer threw 93 pitches, while allowing three hits and two runs in 6.1 innings of relief. Reed stuck out nine. Evan Mitchell also sparkled in relief, with eight strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.
Washington State (1-1) built an early 4-1 lead before the Bulldogs (1-1) tied the contest on a two-run home run by Trey Porter in the sixth inning.
Porter had three of MSU’s 14 hits.

MSU BASEBALL SPLITS WITH WASHINGTON STATE
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State’s Mitch Slauter connected for the game-tying hit and a throwing error plated the game-winning run as the Bulldogs knocked off Washington State 5-4 in a the second game of a college baseball doubleheader played Sunday night at Dudy Noble Field.
The Bulldogs (2-1) rallied from down 4-2 in the eighth inning to win the season-opening weekend series, two games to one. Washington State (1-2) had the dramatics in the opener, as the Cougars plated two 13th-inning scores to post a 6-5 victory.
“It was really important for us at this stage in the game to play a really good Pac-12 opponent, who has been a regional final two of the last three years,” MSU head coach John Cohen said. “They’re a good club and have a lot of poise. You can tell they are inexperienced on the mound. I thought we played so well, and we just had some crazy things happen to us today.
“I just have this overwhelming feeling that we have the right kids and we’re going to be better 50 games from now than we are right now. Playing a team of this caliber was crucial in my mind.”
In the MSU eighth inning, a leadoff walk issued to Adam Frazier opened the door. Brent Brownlee followed with a double to right field. A sacrifice-fly by Trey Porter brought the score to 4-3. Slauter followed with RBI-double to the left center gap. C.T. Bradford then added a single with an overthrow by the catcher allowing Slauter to trot home with the game-winning run.
Washington State built an early 2-0 lead with a two-run double by Nate Blackham. The Maroon and White answered with an unearned run in the third inning and Porter’s second home run of the day in the sixth inning.
“I just want to contribute whatever way I can,” Porter said. “Definitely in my first at-bat, I had huge butterflies. But once you get that first at-bat out of the way, it just comes down to playing baseball.”
The Cougars built a 4-2 lead with a pair of scores in the top of the eighth inning. RBI-singles by Derek Jones and Adam Nelubowich were the big blows in that inning.
Taylor Stark (1-0) earned the win with 1.2 innings of relief work. Stark allowed three hits and one run, with two strikeouts. Kendall Graveman posted a strong start with 6.1 innings of three-hit baseball and two runs (both earned). Graveman struck out four as MSU pitching struck out a total 25 for the afternoon.
“I thought Kendall was outstanding,” MSU head coach John Cohen said. “If you take away two at-bats when he hits a guy and walks a guy – if he doesn’t have those two sequences – he is going to pitch a shutout through six innings. We are really excited about him because he can race through some innings.”
The Bulldogs finished with 10 hits, including a three-hit night by Bradford.
Blackham and Jason Monda each had multiple hits for Washington State, which finished with seven hits.
In the opener, Tommy Richards’ two-run single in the top half of the 13th inning lifted the Cougars to a 6-5 win.
The MSU pitching staff posted 19 strikeouts and threw eight straight scoreless innings before Richards touched Caleb Reed in the top half of the 13th inning. In the home half of the inning, the Maroon and White got a single by Brownlee, double by Frazier and RBI-groundout by Daryl Norris.
“They have a lot of lefties in their lineup and they hit the ball very well,” Reed said. “That’s probably the best team we’ve played to open the year since I’ve been here.”
Washington State (1-1) built an early 4-1 lead before the Bulldogs (1-1) tied the contest on a two-run home run by Porter in the sixth inning.
Porter had three of MSU’s 14 hits.
“Trey’s a good player,” Cohen said. “He gets all over the plate and is very difficult to pitch to. When he gets those kinds of situations, he makes the most of it.”
No. 22 Rebels Fall To TCU Sunday, Split Series With No. 10 Horned Frogs
FORT WORTH, Texas – Tanner Mathis went 3-for-4 with an RBI and the Rebels strung together a fifth-inning rally to tie the game, but couldn’t grab the lead as No. 22 Ole Miss (1-1) fell to No. 10 TCU (1-1) by a score of 5-3 on Sunday.
The two teams split the weekend series after Ole Miss won the opening game 7-4 on Friday night and Saturday’s game was cancelled due to inclement weather in the area.
Mike Mayers (0-1) suffered the loss in relief despite strikeout out eight batters in 4.0 innings of work. Mayers allowed two runs on one hit with two walks after entering the game to start off the bottom of the fifth in relief of starter R.J. Hively.
Preston Morrison (1-0) picked up the win in relief, working 3.1 innings of relief with two strikeouts while holding the Rebels hitless in his time on the mound.
“It was almost a mirror image of Friday night’s game,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “They got the clutch double and we didn’t make the plays we needed to make in the first inning. The first inning just got away from us. Both teams pitched well today. We competed really well against a very good baseball team this weekend.”
TCU got things started in the first, using a liner to right center and back-to-back bunt singles to load the bases with no outs. Ole Miss got a strikeout on the next at bat, before TCU would plate two runs on a ground out and a throwing error in an attempt to turn a double play. Hively then coaxed a grounder out of Brett Johnson to end the inning down 2-0.
The Rebels escaped a jam in the third inning when Hively struck out Johnson looking to end a bases loaded scenario for the Horned Frogs.
TCU pushed the lead out to three in the fourth inning when a double and a triple from Rivera and Von Tungeln pushed a run home. The Rebels got out of the inning a batter later when Jason Coats flew out to the wall in center, leaving TCU on top 3-0.
Ole Miss mounted a rally in the third, putting two men on with two outs before Yarbrough ripped a single down the first base line to drive in Zach Kirksey. TCU went to its bullpen or Brandon Finnegan, who then gave up back-to-back singles to Matt Snyder and Tanner Mathis as the Rebels tied the score at three.
The back-to-back RBI singles sent the Horned Frogs to the bullpen again for right-hander Preston Morrison. Morrison then won a hard-fought at bat with Will Allen who saw nine pitches before TCU would get out of the inning.
TCU got two of the runs back in the home half of the fifth, using a double off the wall in right with two outs to drive in two runs. Mike Mayers, who had come in to relieve Hively to start the fifth, got two quick outs before putting two men on base to set up the two-RBI hit from Michael Resnick. TCU led 5-3 after five complete.
The Rebels could not mount another rally from there as the home standing Horned Frogs closed out the game to split the weekend series.
Ole Miss will return to action on Tuesday night with a single game against Arkansas State. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
