OXFORD, Miss. – Sophomore catcher Marina Parra tied a career-high with two RBI and senior right fielder Amanda Hutcheson knocked in two more runs as Ole Miss knocked off instate foe Jackson State 5-2 on Tuesday night at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
The start of the game was delayed one hour and 46 minutes due to rain in the Oxford area and after a 1-2-3 top of the first for Jackson State, center fielder RT Cantillo doubled to right center and scored Brittany Broome, who reached on a single up the middle. After Cantillo moved to third on a wild pitch and first baseman Londen Ladner and designated player Kendall Bruning both walked to load the bases with two outs, Parra earned a full-pitch walk to bring home Cantillo and Hutcheson followed with a looping two-run single to center that scored Ladner and Bruning and put the Rebel up 4-0 after one.
Shortstop Allison Brown doubled to the wall in left with one out in the third and scored on Parra’s two-out single to left center to give Ole Miss a 5-0 lead. Parra was 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk, while Broome went 2-for-3 with a single and triple.
Junior Erinn Jayjohn retired the first six batters she faced and 10 of the first 11 before a single from Nave Tayler with one out in the fourth. Tayler would later score on a sac fly to center by Tiger shortstop Amanda Vasquez to cut the Rebel lead to 5-1. Jayjohn picked up the win after allowing just two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Bruning entered the game with two outs in the top of the seventh and picked up an eight-pitch save on a strikeout, the first save of her of her career.
Ole Miss returns to action this weekend when the Rebels travel to Gainesville, Fla. for a three-game series at No. 6 Florida beginning on Friday.
