    Wambach, Mitts Lead USA to Soccer Gold Medal

    LONDON - The United States won its third consecutive gold medal in women's soccer, beating Japan 2-1 in Thursday's match at Wembley Stadium.

    Carli Lloyd scored both goals for the U.S., the first in the eighth minute and the second in the 54th minute, giving the U.S. a 2-0 lead.

    Goalkeeper Hope Solo held the defending World Champion Japanese team to a single tally, which was scored by Yuki Ogimi in the 63rd minute. Solo also made a huge save in the last five minutes of the match, preserving the 2-1 lead.

    The U.S. outshot Japan 17-10 in the match.

    Former Florida Gators Abby Wambach and Heather Mitts were both members of the 2012 U.S. team. Wambach had three shots on goal in the gold medal match. Mitts provided a veteran presence to the U.S. team during the tournament.
