TROY, Ala. – Fresh off its first Southeastern Conference win of the season over Auburn, Mississippi State traveled to Troy this week for its first road bout in 2012. The Bulldogs (3-0, 1-0 SEC) received a tough challenge from the Trojans but emerged victorious, 30-24.
MSU signal-caller Tyler Russell threw three touchdown passes to Chad Bumphis, and LaDarius Perkins chewed up 179 yards on the ground for the Bulldogs. Shawn Southward did his part for Troy (1-2) with 137 yards and two scores on the ground, but the Trojans’ 17-point second half effort was not enough to overcome a 23-7 halftime deficit.
Bumphis finished the game with a career-high 180 yards on six receptions, marking the fourth time in his career that he has eclipsed the 100-yard mark in a single game.
Corey Robinson threw for 343 yards for Troy, but he did not throw a touchdown pass and threw two costly interceptions. Mississippi State returns to Starkville next weekend to take on South Alabama.
