Round One Results
OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. - The No. 6 Auburn men's golf team is in third after shooting a 9-over 289 on Sunday at the Olympia Fields Invitational at the Olympia Fields Country Club.
The Tigers trail No. 8 Arkansas by six strokes and Northwestern by one. No. 21 Duke (+11), Oklahoma State (+13) and No. 16 Florida State (+13) round out the top five.
"Overall, I thought the guys played well today on a very tough golf course," head coach Nick Clinard said. "We need to stay very patient and continue to learn the value of a par and the value of each and every shot."
All-SEC sophomore Michael Johnson led the way for the Tigers on Sunday shooting a 1-over 71 and is tied for seventh, three shots behind Northwestern's Nicholas Losole.
After making par on the first nine holes, Johnson carded back-to-back birdies on Nos. 10 and 11 to move to 2-under. On No. 14, Johnson bogeyed on the par-3 before double bogeying on No. 17 to finish at 1-over.
All-American Dominic Bozzelli and senior Michael Hebert are tied for ninth at 2-over par. Hebert began the day with a birdie, but bogeyed Nos. 2 and 5 to make the turn at 1-over. After making the turn, Hebert bogeyed Nos. 12 and 16 before finishing the round with a birdie on the par-5 18.
Bozzelli made the turn at 2-over, bogeyed No. 13 and birdied No. 15. After a bogey on No. 17, Bozzelli also closed with a birdie on No. 18.
Redshirt sophomore Dan Stringfellow is tied for 28th after shooting a 4-over 74. The Roselle, Ill., native birdied the first hole, but suffered back-to-back bogeys on 5 and 6. On the back nine, Stringfellow bogeyed Nos. 10, 15 and 16. Redshirt freshman Jake Mondy is tied for 68th at 11-over.
The Tigers will tee off Monday's second round at 9:20 a.m. with Northwestern and Arkansas. Live stats for the Olympia Fields Invitational can be found on www.golfstat.com.
