LEXINGTON, Ky. – Behind a straight-set sweep on Thursday afternoon, University of Kentucky men’s tennis junior Tom Jomby has advanced into the round of 16 at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Tournament in the single’s draw at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tusla, Okla.
The Nantes, France native claimed a 6-2, 7-6 (2) victory over Georgia’s Nathan Pascha Thursday afternoon to punch his ticket into the sweet 16. On Wednesday, Jomby earned a spot in the second round off a straight-set 7-6 (4), 6-3 upset win over No. 14 Ben McLachan of California Berkley in the opening round of action.
Jomby will continue his quest for a spot in the ITA National Championships in Flushing, N.Y., on Friday afternoon as he will face off against No. 7 Raymond Sarmiento of Southern California. Jomby’s semifinal would feature the winner of Matija Pecotic of Princeton and Roberto Quiroz of USC.
Fellow French teammate Anthony Rossi came into the tournament ranked No. 10 overall. Rossi was upended in three sets in the opening round by Peter Kobelt of Ohio State 3-6, 7-5, 6-1. Kobelt today advanced to the round of 16 with a straight-set 6-4, 6-4 win over Joe Salisbury of Memphis.
