    SEC Players Named Award Finalists

Eight Southeastern Conference football players were named finalists for six different national individual awards on Monday.

Texas A&M freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel was named finalist for the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award and the Maxwell Award, which is given to the nation's outstanding player.  Auburn's Cam Newton was the last SEC player to win the O'Brien and the Maxwell Awards in 2010.

Alabama senior center Barrett Jones and Texas A&M junior tackle Luke Joeckel are two of three finalists for the Outland Trophy.  Jones won the honor last year as an offensive tackle.  The Outland Trophy is given annually to the nation's top interior lineman.

South Carolina sophomore defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and Georgia junior linebacker Jarvis Jones are two of three finalists for the Bednarik Award, which is given to the nation's best defensive player.  LSU's Patrick Peterson was the last SEC player to win the honor in 2010.

Alabama junior cornerback Dee Milliner and Mississippi State senior cornerback Johnthan Banks are two of three finalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, which is given to the nation's best defensive back.   The SEC has won the last three Thorpe Awards: Tennessee's Eric Berry in 2009, LSU's Patrick Peterson in 2010 and LSU's Morris Claiborne last season.

Florida senior kicker Caleb Sturgis is one of three finalists for the Lou Groza Award, which is given annually to the nation's top kicker.  The last SEC player to win the Groza was Ole Miss' Jonathan Nichols in 2003.

Since 2006, SEC student-athletes and coaches have won 51 major individual awards, an average of more than eight per year.  The league won an all-time high 12 individual honors in 2010 and won eight in 2011.

Since 2006, the SEC has won 24 different individual awards out of the 29 that are given.  The only national awards since 2006 that the SEC has not won is the Biletnikoff (wide receiver), Groza (kicker), Brian Burlsworth (walk-on), Johnny Unitas (senior quarterback) and Ted Hendricks (defensive end).
