OXFORD, Miss. – Danielle McCray recorded her first career double-double as the Ole Miss women’s basketball team beat Mississippi Valley State, 62-60.
With the win, Ole Miss improved to 3-1 while Mississippi Valley State fell to 1-4. Diara Moore led all players with 15 points while Valencia McFarland added 12. McCray posted 11 points and tied her career high with 12 boards while Courtney Marbra added 10 rebounds. Moore has scored in double figures in all four games this season.
“One of the good things about sports is we celebrate wins and it doesn’t matter if that win is by one point or by 30 points we are going to celebrate every win we get,” head coach Brett Frank said. “Tonight was one of those victories and we are excited about it.
Ole Miss used an early run to go up nine, 14-5, with 13:29 to play before Mississippi Valley State cut the Rebels’ lead to two, 14-12, with 11:37 left in the half.
Ole Miss used a 13-6 run to close the half as the Rebels led 31-23 at the break. Diara Moore led Ole Miss with nine points at the half while Danielle McCray added seven points and six boards.
The Rebels went 11-13 from the free throw line in the half and shot 33.3 percent (10-30) from the floor while the Lady Devilettes shot 29.0 percent (9-31).
In the second half, Ole Miss used a 9-2 run to push its lead to 49-37 on a layup from Monique Jackson with 11:50 left in the game. The Lady Devilettes cut Ole Miss’ lead to three, 56-53, with 3:17 remaining.
For the game, Ole Miss shot 85.2 percent from the free throw line (23-27) and 31.7 percent from the floor (19-60). MVSU shot 34.3 percent from the floor.
Ole Miss will host Lipscomb on Thursday at 7 p.m.
