    Auburn Player Quotes

    Allen Payne
    On being more assertive...
"I guess I was. I got off to a hot start. I was able to get a jumper to go down and a layup . That's always a good way to get your rhythm going in a big time game like this one."

On differences playing the second half...
"They got off to a good lead. They jumped out on us and we were down by seven early, but as I said after the Florida State game we're starting to mature as a team. Young guys like Shaq and Brian are starting to pick up how to win and how to keep your head up when adversity hits because it's coming. I think that's the biggest thing that we started thinking about after that timeout that coach called. I just think that we're starting to grow up a lot, and it showed when we started this spark back."

On the game being more physical...
"This is the SEC. It's the most physical league there is. When you've got a guy out there like Johnny O'Bryant that's 6'9" 285 pounds, it's going to get physical. It's going to be a battle like that every night. We were able to respond in a positive way and get ready to pull it out."

On the last time seeing Barbee this happy...
"He was happy? I didn't see that. Coach is a perfectionist, and he expects us to perform at our max level and to try to be perfect. He knows you can't be, but that's the way he tries to get us to strive for. He came in after the game and he said `Good job, way to start the lead, but we have to meet tomorrow afternoon, and we have to do some stuff to get ready for South Carolina.' He's looking ahead and seeing the big picture knowing that this is a good win for us, but we still have a ways to go if we want to do something good this year."

    Shaquille Johnson
On being motivated by trash talk...
"I came in the game ready to play hard. He was talking trash, but I just kept trying to play hard and tried to ignore it."

On it being Johnson's best game...
"I think it's been my best game this season."

    On his first SEC game...
"I just came out with the same mentality--just to play hard and try to win. It was more physical."

On seeing Chubb before getting hi on the alley-oop...
"I didn't see anybody. I just remember falling."

    LSU Player Quotes

    Anthony Hickey, G
    On starting conference play...
"It was kind of a tough environment we came into, the fans were into it and the players were ready. On our side, we just weren't into it. We need to stay focused. We just have to get better in the next game."

    Johnny O'Bryant III, F
    On starting conference play...
"We felt very good coming in. I think we can compete in the conference with any team. Tonight was one of the nights we slipped up. We gave up a good opportunity to win against a good basketball team and we just have to get ready for Saturday."

On the improvements that need to be made...
"You just can't sit on one loss, one loss will turn into two, and two will turn into three. We just have to get ready for Saturday against a good Florida basketball team."

On how his foul trouble changed the offense...
"I think the zone kind of slowed down, [Anthony] Hickey and Andre[Stringer] were running pretty good with the ball and getting the ball up pretty fast. I think the zone kind of slowed them down. Made us settle for high post free throw jumpers and they wouldn't follow with anything."

On how he physically felt while playing...
"I didn't feel 100 percent, but I went out there and tried to give my team all I could. I don't think I had a very good game, but I have to bounce back and get ready for Saturday."

On gaining the lead in the beginning of the second half and then losing it...
"I think we got settled. We maybe got a little too comfortable."

    Coach Quotes

    LSU head coach Johnny Jones
    On the game...
"I told the guys leading up to the game that the preseason games are over. It's conference play and the intensity level is different. The importance of games is different. I told them there was no way we could try and come in here tonight and match the intensity level of Auburn. We had to exceed the intensity level of Auburn. They got off to a great start and made some shots. We played from the behind in the beginning and I thought we did a great job of fighting back and getting up one there at half and getting back in the second half and establishing ourselves right there initially. Then, we didn't do a great job of continuing to share the basketball and getting in gaps. We settled too much on both ends. Offensively, we settled, jumped up and took too many threes instead of getting in gaps. On the defensive end, we weren't very good. We gave up 52 percent shooting from the field in the second half and that's just a matter of not grinding it out and making tough plays defensively. We've got to get better. We allowed some guys to hurt us and we wanted to concentrate on taking Frankie Sullivan away from them. I wanted to make sure that we were better and we didn't do that. We allowed two other players to step up and I think get career highs."

    On Johnny O'Bryant...
"Well Johnny wasn't very effective tonight. I think his layoff hurt him. He just wasn't fluid enough for us inside or out. So we had to try and match and put other guys in there to see if we could get some productivity out of them tonight. Fortunately, we had two other guys step up and make some plays, but we just weren't effective enough on both ends of the floor."

    On Frankie Sullivan...
"I thought we did an excellent job on Frankie. We did an excellent job of doubling him, coming off of screens. I thought guys did a great job of shattering him when he went away from the screen. He only took ten tough shots and made three of them, so that's a good night for us defensively. You want to take him away because he's a big time scorer. If you feel like you can take him away from them, you have an opportunity to win. They stepped up and made big plays tonight and Johnson stepped up and made big plays for them as well. So anytime you take a guy away you have to pay attention to detail. You can't let other guys slip out and make big plays. That hurt us tonight.
