BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southeastern Conference holds both top spots in the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Computer Team Rankings, which were released on Monday. Arkansas holds steady as the nation’s No. 1 men’s team, while LSU is the new No. 1 on the women’s side.
This is the first edition of the polls to not include preseason data in their projections. When marks, times and scores from last season were removed from consideration, the order of teams underwent a thorough jostling. Only six of the 50 teams in both the men’s and women’s rankings, only six held steady in their positions from a week ago.
The SEC boasts the top-two teams on both the men’s and women’s sides and features a nation-leading 12 ranked teams between the two genders.
The Razorbacks continue to top the men’s poll, while three-time defending NCAA Indoor Champion Florida ranks second. Texas A&M drops one spot this week to No. 4. The LSU men check in at No. 14, while Ole Miss is ranked No. 16. The other teams comprising the men’s top-five include No. 3 Oklahoma State and No. 5 Penn State.
The LSU women move into the nation’s top spot following a strong weekend at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville. This marks the Tigers’ first time atop the rankings since the final week of the 2008 season, when they were the top-ranked team throughout the duration of the regular season until a runner-up showing at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The Arkansas women moved up to No. 2, while Florida is No. 6, Georgia is No. 7 and Texas A&M is No. 8. South Carolina checks in at No. 14, while Mississippi State is No. 25. The other teams comprising the women’s top-five include No. 3 Clemson, No. 4 Kansas and No. 5 Oregon.
The next USTFCCCA rankings will be released on Feb. 19.
The 2013 SEC Indoor Championships are slated for Feb. 22-24 at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark.
