SEC Boasts National Leaders Heading Into SEC Indoors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southeastern Conference boasts the nation’s top team on both the men’s and women’s sides heading into the 2013 SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships, according to the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Computer Team Rankings, which were released on Tuesday. Arkansas is the nation’s No. 1 men’s team, while LSU is the nation’s No. 1 women’s team.

In total, the SEC features a nation-leading 11 ranked teams across the two genders. The National Computer Team Rankings project how a team will finish in a National Championship meet setting, rather than a triangular or dual. The rankings are compiled from meet data in the 2012-13 season.

Defending SEC Indoor Champion Arkansas is the nation’s top-ranked team on the men’s side, while three-time defending NCAA Champion Florida is No. 2. Texas A&M is the No. 3 team nationally. LSU checks in at No. 16 and Ole Miss is No. 19.

Arkansas’ men have been ranked No. 1, and comfortably so, in every edition of the National Team Computer Rankings this season.

On the women’s side, five SEC teams are ranked among the nation’s top 10, led by No. 1 LSU. Arkansas is No. 3, while Florida is No. 6, Georgia is No. 7 and Texas A&M is No. 9. South Carolina checks in at No. 14.

Behind national top-10 performances from Denise Hinton (No. 4 weight throw – 70-9¼/21.57m) and Keri Emanuel (No. 10 long jump – 20-5¾/6.24m), the LSU women gained  6.77 net points to increase their nation-best team score to 169.22 and remain on top for the second consecutive week.

The next USTFCCCA rankings will be released on Feb. 26.

The 2013 SEC Indoor Championships are slated for Feb. 22-24 at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark.
