    Soccer Wins In Spring Opener

    March 6, 2013

The Auburn soccer team defeated Jacksonville University, 3-1, on Saturday, March 2, at Jacksonville, Fla. Starting off the spring with a strong start, the team has begun preparation for West Florida, on March 23.

Within the first 10 minutes of the game Auburn earned a free kick close to midfield line. Jordan Miller sent in a long ball that found the head of Ashley Kotero, who flicked it on towards the end line. Maddie Barnes had made a darting run and sent the ball back across the face of the goal, assisting a sliding Tori Ball who was there to finish.

Four minutes later Ball struck again as she anticipated and picked off a pass by Jacksonville's backline and proceeded to slot the ball past the keeper, putting Auburn up 2-0.

Jacksonville responded and was able to cut the lead in half with a goal in the 32nd minute of the 1st half.

With the score 2-1 at half, both team's tempos were ignited at the start of the second half. Auburn's backline held off Jacksonville's numbers flying forward, battling back and forth between the 18's. With 10 minutes left in the game, Auburn strung together a sequence of passes changing the point of attack from right to the left, with left back Kim Spence being the recipient. Spence was able to get the ball to the end line where she was able lay off a service to Logan Beal, who was able to finish first time on a great goal giving the Tigers added insurance.

"It was a great starting point for the spring season, I can't wait to see where we go from here" said sophomore Tori Ball.
