AUBURN - The Auburn volleyball team will be in action A-Day Weekend with two chances for fans to get a sneak-peek of next year's Tiger squad.
The Tigers will host an open practice/alumni scrimmage from 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday. Then, on Sunday, Auburn will play in a series of scrimmage matches against Southeastern Louisiana and South Alabama with play getting underway at 9:30 a.m. Admission is free for both days at the Student Activities Center.
"We are excited to have some of our alumni come back and join us for a scrimmage Saturday before the A-Day game," Auburn head coach Rick Nold said. "Not only does it allow us an extra date of competition, but it's also very important for us to keep them included in the Auburn Volleyball Family. They have all had a big impact on this program when they were playing, and we want them to remain connected with us as we continue to grow.
"Sunday will be our last date of competition for the spring and, more than anything, it's a time for us to see how far we have come and identify what we need to focus on during the summer."
The Tigers have competed three times thus far during the spring season. Auburn opened their competition schedule with a series of matches at UCF's Spring Fling, then played scrimmages at Florida State and Georgia Tech over the last few weeks.
"Overall, I am happy with the improvements that we've made," Nold said. "We have made some huge strides in our strength and conditioning, and that has had a big impact on the tempo we've been able to practice and play. We still need to become much more consistent with how we handle and distribute the ball, but there has been good progress in both, so I believe it's just about getting more repetitions between now and the fall."
Auburn returns four starters (plus libero) and nine letter-winners from the 2012 team that finished with a 17-13 overall record, 8-12 in SEC play. The 2013 fall schedule will be released in the coming weeks on AuburnTigers.com.
