COLUMBIA, Mo. – Florida sophomore Kyle Strawn gave the Gators their second consecutive men’s hammer throw title at the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships to highlight the opening day of the 2013 event at Audrey J. Walton Stadium on the campus of the University of Missouri. Thursday’s action, which was delayed two hours at the start due to inclement weather, featured a light schedule of primarily multi-events.

The Gators picked up 20 points to lead the competition following the opening day, as the men’s hammer throw was the only final event contested. Florida went 1-2 and had three athletes score in the event. Strawn won with a personal-best mark of 66.90m/219-6. Jeremy Postin, the 2013 SEC men’s hammer throw champion, placed second with a mark of 66.83m/219-3. Alabama freshman Elias Hakansson was third overall with a mark of 65.50m/214-11.

“Obviously it’s really exciting to win SECs,” Strawn said. “Even though I grew up in California, I’ve always been a Gator fan and it means a lot to me to wear this uniform. I had a goal for myself and I wanted to throw 65 meters and I surpassed that. It’s awesome to compete against these guys every day and it’s really important for us to get these points early.”

Arkansas’ Makeba Alcide leads the women’s heptathlon following the opening four events of that competition. She has logged a four-event score of 3,756, which included not only an SEC heptathlon meet record, but an SEC overall meet record in the women’s high jump at 1.88m/6-2. Mississippi State’s Erica Bougard is currently in second place with a score of 3,555, while Florida’s Lorraine Graham is in third with 3,477 points.

Georgia’s Garrett Scantling leads the men’s decathlon through five events of the competition. Scantling scored 4,156 total points, while his teammate Maicel Uibo is in second with 4,117 points. Arkansas’ Kevin Lazas is in third with 4,030 points. Scantling won the shot put, high jump and decathlon – the final three events of the day.

The second day of the SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships begins Friday at 11 a.m. CT at Audrey J. Walton Stadium.
