AUBURN – Auburn women’s tennis freshman Pleun Burgmans received another award on Tuesday as she was named Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southern Region Rookie of the Year.
“I’m excited for Pleun to be receiving all the recognition she has for her great season,” Auburn women’s tennis head coach Lauren Longbotham Meisner said. “She had a tremendous freshman season and I look forward to seeing her progress over the course of her career.”
Burgmans compiled a record of 16-3 in dual matches, playing exclusively at the top spot. She recorded an impressive record of 9-4 against ranked opponents and was named SEC Freshman of the Year.
Additionally, she was named First Team All-SEC, the first such honor for an Auburn player since former All-American Fani Chifchieva earned the award from 2007-09. Burgmans was also named to the SEC All-Freshman team.
The Netherlands native is currently ranked No. 22 nationally by the ITA and 10th in the country with her doubles partner, Plamena Kurteva. She will compete in the NCAA individual championship draw next week in Urbana, Illinois, while also participating in the doubles tournament with Kurteva.
