HOOVER, Ala. – It will be a match-up of the nation’s top teams on Sunday when No. 1 Vanderbilt and No. 2 LSU meet for the 2013 Southeastern Conference Baseball Tournament Championship at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. CT live on ESPN2.
That the SEC Baseball Tournament features the best collegiate baseball competition is nothing new. The SEC has averaged better than seven teams per year in the NCAA Tournament since 1990 and has sent 10 different teams to the College World Series during that span.
Though No. 1 has met No. 2 in other rounds of the SEC Tournament in recent years, Sunday’s game will mark the first 1 vs. 2 final in modern-era SEC Tournament history.
The two squads bring a combined 102 wins this season into Sunday’s game and, demonstrating the depth of SEC baseball and the competitiveness of the tournament, both advanced to the championship game via the loser’s bracket.
“This is what it’s all about,” LSU senior Raph Rhymes said. “We get to wake up in the morning and play for the championship. That’s why I came back for my senior year. We’re here to win championships and now we have the opportunity to do that.”
LSU (51-9), which will be making its first appearance in the SEC Tournament Championship since 2010, is looking to win its 10th overall SEC Tournament title and its fourth in the past six seasons. Vanderbilt (51-8) makes its third consecutive appearance in the SEC Tournament Championship and its seventh in 10 years under head coach Tim Corbin.
“Getting the chance to play in the championship game is special,” Corbin said. “I think there was a sense of redemption from the kids from the other night. We were disappointed. The kids had the ability to stay in the present and put them in this position right now.”
