Signee Matt Gilchrest Wins Prestigious 2013 FJ Invitational

    June 14, 2013

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Auburn signee Matt Gilchrest won the prestigious 2013 American Junior Golf Association’s FJ Invitational on Friday after shooting a 2-under 68 in the final round of play to win the event by four strokes.

The event, known as one of the most premier junior tournaments in the world, featured 84 boys, ages 15-18, from 26 states and four countries. The Boys Division played the course at 7,097 yards.

“Playing badly on the back nine yesterday helped me in a weird way,” Gilchrest said. “At one point I got to six up, but I knew it really wasn’t over until the last putt drops. This win gives me way more confidence that I can play consistently well, at any level.”

Gilchrest, who shot a 71 on Thursday, bogeyed No. 3 to begin the day, but reeled off back-to-back birdies on Nos. 5 and 6 to make the turn at 1-under.

On the back-9, the Southlake, Texas, native birdied No. 13 before carding birdies on Nos. 15 and 16 to move to 4-under, but bogeyed the final two holes to finish with a 2-under 68.
