Scouting report: LSU's Les Miles looking for more punch

HOOVER, Ala. -- Sure, Les Miles lost seniors from last year's team, but he also lost 11 juniors who thought they were good enough for the NFL.

    Les Miles: What me worry?

"I like us in every game," said the LSU coach at SEC Media Days on Thursday.

LSU hopes to rebuild quickly, certainly in time for the Bengal Tigers' SEC opener against Auburn on Sept. 21. That game is in Baton Rouge, a year after LSU escaped Auburn 12-10.

LSU finished 12-3 last year, losing three games by a total of 12 points -- and winning two games by a total of four points.

Miles hired offensive coordinator Cam Cameron in the offseason to put a little separation on the scoreboard.

"Certainly, they're playing much more confidently," Miles said.

Which brings Miles to quarterback Zach Mettenberger.

"We expect our quarterback play to be much better," Miles said.

Mettenberger said he's ready for the challenge.

"They're going to expect more plays from me as a senior," Mettenberger said. "Hopefully, me being a second-year player, my performance will be better."

Mettenberger passed for 2,609 yards and 12 touchdowns in his first year in Baton Rouge. What's next?

"It's one way or another for a guy's legacy," he said. "You're either a winner or a loser. Hopefully, I can lead the team to a national championship."

LSU was picked to finish third in the SEC West at SEC Media Days.

"We're a team that could care less about what the rankings are, especially in the preseason," Mettenberger said.
