    Razorbacks In Fifth After Opening Round Of Olympia Fields Invite

    OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – The No. 7 University of Arkansas men’s golf team opened its fall campaign on Friday with a score of 294 in cool and gusty conditions to sit in sole possession of fifth place at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational held at the Olympia Fields Country Club North Course.

    Arkansas, who enters as the defending champs, was part of the first group on the course this morning in a 15-team field that features eight top 25 teams, including five in the top 10. The Razorbacks 294 is 13 shots off the lead held by No. 1 Alabama (281), but just three back of second place No. 8 Oklahoma State (291).

    The Razorbacks will be paired with No. 3 Texas and Baylor for Saturday’s second round, going off the par 5, 1st hole from 9:40-10:12 a.m. Live scoring is available through or Fans can also get in-round updates on twitter @RazorbackMGolf.

    The youthful part of the Razorback lineup provided the top three scores and nine of the team’s 12 birdies, led by reigning SEC Freshman of the Year Taylor Moore’s 72 that that puts him in a tie for 10th out of the field of 75. Moore opened with back-to-back bogeys but fought back with 10 pars and three birdies from that point on. Fellow sophomore Nicolas Echavarria provided a 73 that included three birdies, while redshirt sophomore Kolton Crawford shot a 74 in his first round since the end of his SEC All-Freshman campaign in 2012.

    One of 16 players in this weekend’s field that was named to Golf World’s Top 50 Players to Watch list in the preseason, senior Sebastian Cappelen fired a 75 for the 97th counting score of his career. Senior Blake Biddle shot a 76 in his first round as a Razorback after transferring in from UNLV this summer.

    Friday’s conditions featured temperatures between 55-65 degrees and winds as strong as 25 mph. Just four players in the field broke par on the day.

    Crimson Tide Leads Olympia Fields/Illini Invitational by 10 Shots

    OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – The second-ranked and defending national champion Alabama men’s golf team began the 2013-14 season on Friday at the Olympia Field/Illini Invitational with a 1-over-par round of 281 at the par-70, 7,205-yard Olympia Fields Country Club.

    The Crimson Tide has a 10-shot lead over Oklahoma State in second place and is 12 shots better than Texas and Texas Tech in a tie for third place. Arkansas tied for fifth at 14-over 294 with Baylor and Stanford tied for sixth (295). The Tide has three players inside the top five after the opening round of the OFCC/Illini Invitational.

    Alabama senior Trey Mullinax leads individually at 3-under-par 67. He made the turn at even par but ran off four birdies in six holes to get to 4-under after 15 holes. Mullinax made bogey on the 16th but enters Saturday’s second round with a one-shot lead on Texas’ Toni Hakula.

    Fellow senior Bobby Wyatt tied for third at 1-under-par 69 after being 1-over at the turn. The native of Mobile, Ala., and star of the Walker Cup, made birdies on the 10th and 18th holes with seven pars between.

    Robby Shelton, from Wilmer, Ala, fired a 1-over par round of 71 on Friday and tied for fifth place in his first round at the Capstone. He made double bogey on the fifth hole and a birdie on the 15th with 16 pars during Friday’s round.

    Senior Cory Whitsett carded a 4-over 74 and is tied for 26th while true freshman Gavin Moynihan is tied for 53rd at 7-over 77.

    Alabama will play with OSU and Texas Tech in Saturday’s second round. The Crimson Tide is slated to tee off at 10:20 a.m. at the Olympia Fields Country Club.
