Women's Golf Concludes Day One of Mason Rudolph

    Sept. 20, 2013

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – First round action of the Mason Rudolph Championship wrapped up Friday afternoon at the Vanderbilt Legends Club North Course with the University of Kentucky women’s golf team sitting in 14th place at 12-over par, 300.

Arizona State sits atop the standings at three-under par, 285, while UCLA (+1), Vanderbilt (+1), Auburn (+2) and North Carolina State (+3) complete the top five. The teams return to the course Saturday morning at 9 a.m. ET.

Rounding out the rest of the standings were Baylor (+4), North Carolina (+7), Duke (+8), Alabama (+8), Michigan State (+8), Princeton (+8), Wake Forest (+10), Virginia (+10) and Texas (+15).

“Today was a bit of struggle and the golf course got the best of us,” said Kentucky head coach Golda Johansson Borst. “We didn't adjust well to the fast greens and had a few course management errors early on. Despite that we finished strong and I think that gives us a little momentum for tomorrow.”

The Mason Rudolph Championship always boasts some of the nation’s top teams and that is no different this season as eight teams in the field, including Kentucky, are ranked in the top 25 according to Golfstat.com.

The Wildcats were led by senior Liz Breed’s two-under par, 70, on Friday to put her in a tie for fourth. Breed began the day on the back-nine and recorded an even-par 36. On the front-nine to finish the day, she registered two birdies on hole No. 6 and No. 9 to give her an under-par round.

Sophomore Cylia Damerau and freshman Haley Mills wrapped up the first round tied for 46th at four-over, 76. Damerau started off the round a little shaky, but settled in to play an even-par final nine holes. For Mills, it was the first time this season she hasn’t recorded an under-par round of 18 holes.

Sophomore Sarah Harris turned in a scorecard of six-over, 78, to place her in a tie for 71st. Finishing out the Wildcat lineup was freshman Alessandra Walker, who recorded a 16-over, 88, which places her in 87th.
