COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Despite sophomore Isak Krogstad’s team-high third goal of the year, Dartmouth used a pair of second-half goals to post a 3-1 win over the Kentucky men’s soccer team in the opener of the 2013 Gamecock Classic, hosted by South Carolina, on Friday evening at Eugene Stone Stadium.
Kentucky (2-3) fell behind in the 13th minute, as Colin Heffron netted the first goal of the game for Dartmouth (3-0-2). The Big Green then added to their lead in the 52nd minute, with Gabe Stauber netting his first goal of the year.
UK answered with the team-leading third goal of the year from Krogstad in the 69th minute. The Big Green then notched their third goal of the match in the 80th minute, as Alexander Marsh netted his second of the year.
The Wildcats suffered the defeat despite owning a 17-8 advantage in shots and a 9-1 mark in corner kicks.
UK sophomore goalkeeper Callum Irving allowed his first three goals of the year in his third start. Irving, a native of Vancouver, British Columbia, saved one shot, with Dartmouth goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland saving five shots in 90 minutes.
UK will return to action on Sunday, facing annual power South Florida at 11 a.m. ET at Eugene Stone Stadium to conclude the Gamecock Classic.
Dartmouth got on the board in the 13th minute, as standout forward Alex Adelabu made a run down the near sideline, with UK freshman center back Jordan Wilson on his hip. After the ball was deflected over the end line, Stefan Defregger took a corner kick, the only of the day for Dartmouth, that found Heffron, who had a one-touch volley into the back of the net for the first goal of the game.
The Big Green got a goal in the 52nd minute, as Alberto Gorini lofted a cross into the box for Stauber, who finished it for his first goal of the year.
UK got on the board in the 69th minute, as Tyler Riggs drew a foul at the very top of the 18-yard box. Krogstad took a gorgeous free-kick that flew around the wall inside the box and sailed low and in at the far post for his third goal of the year.
Dartmouth netted a goal in the 80th minute, as Marsh finished a goal after a run down the far sideline, his second of the year.
