Tuscaloosa, Ala. – The Alabama volleyball team extended its winning streak to 10 matches with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-13) win over the Alabama State Hornets on Tuesday night from Foster Auditorium. With the win, the Tide is now 12-2 on the season, while Alabama State drops to 5-12.
In the victory, Alabama posted a .273 hitting percentage while holding the Hornets to a -.035 mark. The Tide hit .423 in the opening set, .100 in the second and .312 in the third. ASU hit negative in the first and second sets and .000 in the third.
Leading the way for the Crimson Tide was a trio of players, as middle blockers Katherine White and Krystal Rivers and outside hitter Brittany Thomas had eight kills each. White had a .500 (8-2/12) hitting percentage while Rivers hit .429 (8-2/14). Laura Steiner chipped in with six kills and Andrea McQuaid had five.
Setter Sierra Wilson had a match-high 34 assists to average 11.33 assists per set. Caitlin Bernardin had a team-high nine digs, Kryssi Daniels and Bria Green had eight and Thomas chipped in with seven.
All 12 players on the Tide roster saw action in the match, as Sherrill Dahlmann had a match and career-high two aces. Mattie Weldy had three kills and finished the match with a .250 hitting percentage.
Bama jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the match, winning the opening set 25-14. The Tide hit .423 in the opening set as White recorded six of her eight kills in the opening frame. Leading 3-2, Alabama went on a 12-1 run to open a 15-3 lead. From there UA cruised to the 11-point win in the opening set.
In the second set, Bama got three kills from Steiner, McQuaid and Thomas en route to a 25-16 win in the set. The Tide limited the Hornets to a -.088 percentage, as ASU had just six kills with nine errors on 34 attempts.
After trailing 6-8 in the third set, Alabama went on an 8-2 run to take a 14-10 lead when Alabama State called a timeout. Out of the timeout, the run continued as the Tide extended their lead to 19-12 when ASU used another timeout. From there, the Tide closed out the set with a 6-1 run to finish the match in three sets. After trailing by two early, UA outscored the Hornets 19-5 to win the third set 25-13.
The Crimson Tide returns to the court on Sunday, Sept. 29, when it opens Southeastern Conference play at home against the No. 18 ranked Kentucky Wildcats. First serve at Foster Auditorium is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. CT.
