    Alabama Volleyball Sweeps UAB

    BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Alabama volleyball team posted a 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-22) non-conference road win over the UAB Blazers from Bartow Arena on Tuesday night. The Crimson Tide improved to 19-6 overall while posting their seventh road win of the season in nine chances, UAB falls to 18-11.

    Krystal Rivers paced the Tide with 12 kills as she posted a .571 hitting percentage after recording no errors on 21 attempts. It was the 18th time she’s reached double figures in kills this season. Brittany Thomas chipped in with 11 kills for her team-leading 19th double-digit kills match of the season.

    Mattie Weldy had nine kills as she closed the match with seven kills in the third set. Andrea McQuaid had seven kills with a .500 hitting percentage to post her fourth straight match with a .350 or better hitting percentage. Sierra Wilson dished out 42 assists (14.00 aps) with four digs, Kryssi Daniels had a team-high 14 digs and Bria Green and Caitlin Bernardin added nine digs each.

    The Crimson Tide out-hit the Blazers .355 to .270 and out-dug UAB 48 to 37. The Blazers recorded seven blocks in the match while the Tide had two.

    For UAB, Sam Skinner led all players with 17 kills, while hitting .406 with seven digs. Sara Rishell had nine kills and five assisted blocks and Kiriana Hirini added six kills. Amber Treace had 34 assists, three kills and three blocks and Rachel Fairbanks led all players with 15 digs.

    In the first set, Alabama held a 16-10 lead before the Blazers ran off four straight points to close the deficit to 16-14. After the Tide responded with a 6-2 run for a 22-16 lead, UAB went on a 6-0 run to even the score at 22-22. After the teams traded points, Alabama got a kill by McQuaid and a Blazers’ error to put the first set away 25-23.

    In a close second set, Alabama held an 18-16 lead before running off six straight points to hold set point at 24-16 with Wilson serving. After a hitting error by Bria Green ended the run, Green would put the second set away with her third kills of the match, as the Tide closed the second set with a 7-1 run for a 25-17 victory.

    The Crimson Tide closed out the match with a 25-22 victory in the third set, posting a .531 hitting percentage in the set. Weldy paced the Tide with seven kills in the set, hitting .636  with no errors on 11 attempts. With the score tied at 19-19, UA got back-to-back kills by McQuaid to open a two-point lead. After a UAB timeout, Thomas served an ace to extend the lead to three. From there the teams traded points, with Rivers posting the final two kills in the match for the Tide.  

    After tonight’s non-conference road match at UAB, the Tide returns to Foster Auditorium for two Southeastern Conference matches this weekend, hosting Arkansas on Friday at 7 p.m., followed by a Sunday afternoon match against No. 7 Missouri at 1:30 p.m.
