Six student-athletes from the Southeastern Conference are among the John R. Wooden Award’s Preseason Top 50 that was announced by the The Los Angeles Athletic Club earlier today. The list is comprised of 50 student-athletes who are the early front-runners for the sport’s most prestigious honor.
Associated Press preseason No. 1 Kentucky had four players chosen to the list (sophomore Willie Cauley-Stein, and three freshmen: Julius Randle, Andrew Harrison, and James Young) which was the most of any school in the nation. Tennessee is one of 11 schools with multiple players on the list with two (senior Jordan McRae and junior Jarnell Stokes).
The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the midseason list and the official voting ballot, which will consist of approximately 20 top players who have proven to their universities that they are also making progress toward graduation and maintaining at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA. The Wooden Award All American Team, consisting of the nation’s top 10 players, will be announced the week of the “Elite Eight” round of the NCAA Tournament.
