GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida lost its sixth straight contest on Saturday, this time at the hands of Georgia Southern in a 26-20 game. The Gators (4-7) struggled to get anything going offensively, and the Eagles ran for 429 yards on the other side to steal a win at The Swamp.
Florida started the game with a 10-0 run thanks to a 27-yard field goal from Francisco Velez and a 3-yard touchdown pass from Skyler Mornhinweg to Solomon Patton. The Eagles (7-4) rushed back with a 20-0 run of their own, however, claiming a 10-point advantage in the third quarter.
The Gators pulled even in the fourth after another Velez field goal and a 46-yard touchdown strike from Mornhinweg to Patton once again. Jerick McKinnon gave GSU the lead for good several minutes later with a 14-yard rushing touchdown. The Eagles missed the extra point, but their defense held deep in its own territory in the closing seconds, deflecting a fourth down pass from Mornhinweg that was intended for Patton.
Mornhinweg threw for two touchdowns on the day, while Kelvin Taylor ran for 92 yards on the ground on 4.2 yards per carry. The Eagles won despite failing to complete a pass on only three attempts.
