    Sankey Promoted To SEC Exec. Assoc. Commissioner And COO

    BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (March 19, 2012) – The Southeastern Conference today announced that Greg Sankey has been promoted to Executive Associate Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer of the conference. Sankey previously served as an Associate Commissioner since 2002. He has been responsible for compliance, governance and enforcement as well as oversight of the conference championships personnel. In his new role, he will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the SEC office.

    "Over the past decade Greg has played an important role as a member of the SEC's leadership team and has been a key contributor to our success,” said SEC Commissioner Mike Slive. “He is extremely talented in all facets of athletics administration and will make even greater contributions to the conference in his expanded role as our chief operating officer.”

    Before joining the SEC, Sankey served on the staff of the Southland Conference for ten years and as commissioner from 1996 until 2002. He also worked on the staff of Northwestern State University as director of compliance and academic services and as head men’s golf coach.

    “It’s been a privilege to serve the Southeastern Conference over the last ten years,” stated Sankey. “I look forward to working with the commissioner, conference staff and member universities, and to continuing our work to ensure the SEC remains strong moving forward.”

    Sankey is active within the NCAA where he currently serves as vice-chair of the Division I Legislative Council and as a member of the Committee on Academic Performance and the Division I Committee on Infractions. He previously served on the NCAA Division I Management Council, NCAA Bowl Task Force, and NCAA Committee on Athletics Certification. He also served as the executive vice president of the Collegiate Commissioners Association and as president of the National Association of Athletics Compliance.

    Sankey earned his master’s degree from Syracuse University and his undergraduate degree from the State University of New York College at Cortland. Sankey and his wife Cathy reside in Birmingham and have two daughters, Hannah and Moriah.
