    McWhorter And Davis Nominees: Kentucky

    BIRMINGHAM, Ala., March 27 – Football player Stuart Hines and softball player Rachel Riley have been nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship and football player Jake Lewellen and volleyball player Ann Armes been nominated for the Brad Davis Community Service Post-Graduate Scholarship by the University of Kentucky.
                   
    The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league’s top male and female scholar-athletes. 
               
    The SEC Community Service Post-Graduate Scholarship was named for former Associate Commissioner Brad Davis.  Davis succumbed to cancer on March 2, 2006.  He had been a member of the SEC staff since 1988, first serving as an assistant commissioner until 1994 when he was promoted to associate commissioner.

    The Southeastern Conference will name the 2012 recipients of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship on April 6 in conjunction with National Student-Athlete Day.  The Davis Community Service Post-Graduate Scholarship winners will be announced on April 5.
    Highlights of the Wildcats’ nominees include:

    Stuart Hines, Football (Male McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Nominee)
    •    Graduated Cum Laude with B.B.A. degree in Finance in May 2011
    •    Member of Dean’s List and SEC Academic Honor Roll
    •    Member of UK’s Frank G. Ham Society of Character
    •    Member of Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America All-District II Team
    •    Team captain in 2011 and finalist for Wuerffel Trophy and ARA Sportsmanship Award
    •    Participated in humanitarian trip to Ethiopia, delivering food and clothes and helping people with homes and gardens
    •    Assisted victims of Joplin, Mo. tornado
    •    Visited area elementary schools, developing mentoring relationships with students
    •    Took part in “Read Across America”, reading to children at an area mall
    •    Member of SEC Football Community Service Team
    •    Named Most Improved Offensive Player by UK coaches in 2009
    •    The Bowling Green, Ky. native is the son of Terry and Denita Hines

    Rachel Riley, Softball (Female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Nominee)
    •    Will earn B.S. degree in Biology in May 2012
    •    Member of Dean’s List, UK Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and SEC Academic Honor Roll
    •    Member of UK’s Frank G. Ham Society of Character
    •    Nominee for Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award
    •    Has volunteered with Salvation Army, Make-a-Wish and American Cancer Society
    •    Participated in the SEC’s Together We Can Food Drive and God’s Pantry.
    •    Two-time captain of UK softball team, 2011-12 and MVP, 2010-11
    •    National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region first-team, 2011
    •    Named to 2012 Pre-season USA Softball Player of the Year Watch List
    •    2009 All-SEC Tournament Team
    •    Ranks in the top 10 in UK history in winning percentage, ERA, wins, saves, shutouts, strikeouts, innings pitched, games started, slugging percentage and fielding percentage.
    •    The Bowling Green, Ky. native is the daughter of Alan and Gina Riley

    Jake Lewellen, Football (Male Davis Community Service Nominee)
    •    Will earn a B.S. degree in Agricultural Economics in May 2012
    •    Participated in a fundraising relief effort for victims of Joplin, Mo. tornado
    •    Worked at a Nicaraguan Orchanage for three days as part of Athletes in Action trip
    •    Volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, Read Across America and American Cancer Society
    •    Visited area schools talking to children about overcoming adversity, study skills and keeping good habits
    •    Member of UK’s Frank G. Ham Society of Character
    •    Member of 2011 American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team
    •    Member of SEC Academic Honor Roll
    •    The Louisville, Ky. native is the son of Jerald and Lisa Lewellen

    Ann Armes, Volleyball (Female Davis Community Service Nominee)
    •    Earned a B.S. degree in Dietetics in May 2011 and will earn Masters of Hospitality/Dietetics Administration in May 2012
    •    Named SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, 2011
    •    Member of Dean’s List and SEC Academic Honor Roll
    •    Two-time team captain
    •    Semi-finalist for John R. Wooden Citizens Cup Award, 2010
    •    Member of UK’s Frank G. Ham Society of Character
    •    Member of Omicron Delta Kappa honor society
    •    Three-time member of SEC Volleyball Good Works Team
    •    Participated in collecting shoes for victims of Haiti hurricane and took part in mission trip to Nicaragua
    •    Volunteered in service trips to Columbus, Ohio, Atlanta and Los Angeles, working in communities and after-school tutoring
    •    The Grand Island, Neb. native is the daughter of Connie Armes
