    McWhorter And Davis Nominees: LSU

    BIRMINGHAM, Ala., March 28 – Diver Matthew Vieke and softball player Brittany Mack have been nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship and track and field athlete Cullen Doody and softball player Ashley Applegate been nominated for the Brad Davis Community Service Post-Graduate Scholarship by Louisiana State University.
                   
    The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league’s top male and female scholar-athletes. 
               
    The SEC Community Service Post-Graduate Scholarship was named for former Associate Commissioner Brad Davis.  Davis succumbed to cancer on March 2, 2006.  He had been a member of the SEC staff since 1988, first serving as an assistant commissioner until 1994 when he was promoted to associate commissioner.

    The Southeastern Conference will name the 2012 recipients of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship on April 6 in conjunction with National Student-Athlete Day.  The Davis Community Service Post-Graduate Scholarship winners will be announced on April 5.
    Highlights of the Tigers’ nominees include:

    Matthew Vieke, Swimming & Diving (Male McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Nominee)
    •    Will earn a B.S. degree in Management in May 2012
    •    Tiger Athletic Foundation’s Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, 2010
    •    Wally Pontiff, Jr. Academic Excellence Award, 2011
    •    Society of Rucks Fellows, awarded to top 10 graduating management seniors at LSU, 2011-12 Inductee
    •    Member of Chi Alpha Sigma, national collegiate athlete honors society
    •    Member of LSU Chancellor’s Honor Roll and SEC Academic Honor Roll
    •    Placed second on one-meter dive at 2012 USA Diving Winter Nationals Preliminaries Meet
    •    SEC Diver of the Week (October 18, 2011)
    •    Fifth on the one-meter springboard with a score of 352.60 at the SEC Championships, which is fifth best in the program's history
    •    Three-time NCAA Zone Qualifier and SEC Championships Qualifier
    •    Holds third highest score in the three-meter dive and fourth best score on the platform dive in LSU history
    •    Leader in The Refuge college ministry at LSU
    •    Volunteered with Hurricane Gustav shelter relief efforts as well as Christmas toy drives, Thanksgiving meals for the homeless and helping children celebrate Halloween
    •    Worked with the New Orleans Boys and Girls Club, Louisiana 4H Program and Juvenile Diabetes Walk
    •    The Indianapolis, Ind. native is the son of Andy and Kelli Vieke

    Brittany Mack, Softball (Female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Nominee)
    •    Will earn B.S. degree in Kinesiology in May 2012
    •    Member of Dean’s List and Cox Communications Academic Honor Roll at LSU
    •    Member of Golden Key International Honor Society
    •    National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American, 2011
    •    LSU Team Captain, 2011-12
    •    NFCA Scholar-Athlete, 2009-10
    •    Member of SEC Academic Honor Roll
    •    Four-time SEC Pitcher of the Week, 2011-12
    •    Volunteered with Miracle League Baseball, designed for physically and mentally disabled children
    •    Started community service activity, “Geaux Play”, which encourages physically and mentally disabled children to be physically active
    •    Helped provide Thanksgiving meals to the homeless, visited children at local hospitals, Christmas toy drives and local food drives
    •    The Round Rock, Texas native is the daughter of Jan and Scott Mack

    Cullen Doody, Track & Field / Cross Country (Male Davis Community Service Nominee)
    •    Will earn a B.S. degree in Biological Sciences in May 2012
    •    Recipient of the Wally Pontiff, Jr. Academic Excellence Award
    •    Recipient of LSU Chancellor’s Award, 2009-11
    •    Member of LSU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, 2009-12
    •    Participated in SEC’s Together We Can food drive, Habitat for Humanity, reading program at Delmont Elementary School and visited children at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital
    •    Volunteered with “Geaux Givers”, which hosts elementary school students on LSU campus
    •    Helped host children and families at LSU with “Thanksgiving with the Tigers”
    •    Captain of 2011 LSU Cross Country squad
    •    LSU Cross Country Runner of the Year Award, 2009 & 2011
    •    Member of SEC Academic Honor Roll
    •    The Arabi, La. native is the son of Tim and Ellen Doody

    Ashley Applegate, Softball (Female Davis Community Service Nominee)
    •    Earned a B.S. degree in Elementary Education in December 2011 and will earn Masters of Education in December 2013
    •    Volunteered in area schools, visiting with children, including providing individualized reading assistance for students
    •    Participated in Christmas toy drives, Senior Olympics, ALS Walk for Lou Gehrig Disease and Breast Cancer Awareness at Circle Bowl
    •    Visited with children at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital and participated in Big Buddy Day (mentoring)
    •    Took part in the SEC’s Together We Can food drive and helped provide meals to the homeless at Thanksgiving
    •    Active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes
    •    Member of SEC Academic Honor Roll and LSU Chancellor’s Honor Roll
    •    Member of SEC Softball Community Service Team
    •    Three-year starter and letterwinner on the LSU softball team
    •    The Modesto, Calif. native is the daughter of Greg and Angie Applegate
