HOOVER, Ala. -- The Southeastern Conference on Monday announced the 2013 Baseball Community Service Team.
The SEC supports a Community Service Team for each of its 21 league-sponsored sports. The Community Service Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to his community in superior service efforts.
The 2013 SEC Baseball Community Service Team is as follows:
Cameron Carlisle, Alabama (Sr., Tuscaloosa, Ala.)
Participated in the Miracle League of Tuscaloosa Day, where the Crimson Tide baseball program coached special needs kids … Participated in the Holt Elementary Stars of the Future Reading Program, through which he read books to students … Attended the Sprayberry Educational Center, where the Tide hosted a Christmas party for the students at the school … Participated in the Kentucky Little League Clinic.
Barrett Astin, Arkansas (Jr., Forrest City, Ark.)
A member of the University of Arkansas’ Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, has volunteered his time with Sweat Hawgs Salute to Excellence Program , the Razorback Canned Food Drive and Shop with Razorback SAAC … Has visited the Maples Nursing home and has participated in Christmas Angel Tree shopping at Leverett Elementary … Part of the Book Hogs Read To Win Program and has visited McNair Middle School … Went on a mission trip with several of his teammates to the Dominican Republic in December 2012.
Patrick Savage, Auburn (Jr., Suwanee, Ga.)
Participated in the Pricewaterhouse Coopers Intern Community Service Day at Clarkston High School in Atlanta, doing campus cleanup and facilities painting … Has done home renovations, cleanup and painting in Birmingham, Ala. … Helped in the Toys for Tots in Norcross, Ga., with the collection and separation of inventory … Volunteered at the Feed 5000 Drive through 12 Stone Church in Buford, Ga. … Was a part of the Christmas Caravan, the Strike Out Cancer 5K and the Beat Bama Food Drive … In previous years, has volunteered at the Lee County Humane Society, been a part of the Christmas Caravan, the Strike Out Cancer 5K and the Beat Bama Food Drive … Played games with children and read books at Storybook Farms … Aided in tornado relief and cleanup in Auburn … Mentored a child at Atlanta Union Mission …Visited with patients at UAB Children’s Hospital.
Cody Dent, Florida (Sr., Boynton Beach, Fla.)
Helped in a fourth-grade classroom at Terwilliger Elementary School … Tutored seventh graders in math at Lincoln Middle School … Walked and fed dogs at the Alachua County Humane Society … Handed out presents to young children and families as part of “Christmas on Main Street” … Assisted with Climb for Cancer, an event in which Gator student-athletes play games and participate with cancer-stricken kids and their siblings in a variety of sports on campus … A member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and was named to the 2011 NCAA College World Series All-Tournament Team … Graduated this spring with a bachelor’s degree in sport management.
Blake Dieterich, Georgia (Sr., Winter Garden, Fla.)
Volunteers for various community service projects through the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, including Home Runs For Hometown Rivals, a Special Olympics baseball game at Foley Field and a Special Olympics Prom at Classic Center … Served on “Whatever It Takes” program as Economics tutor at local high school … Served Thanksgiving dinners at a local church … Participated in “Walk Kids To School” program … A four-year letterman as a pitcher who ranks fifth in school history with 91 appearances and ranks among the top-10 in saves.
Jerad Grundy, Kentucky (Sr., Johnsburg, Ill.)
Active in the local community … Has made elementary school visits to Cassidy and Lansdowne Elementary schools … Has participated in the Bluegrass Miracle League, a youth league devoted to providing safe environments for handicapped children to play baseball, for multiple years … Has served as a youth baseball coach … A member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll … A three-time MLB Draft pick in his career, electing to return to finish his degree and complete his senior season in 2013 … Has made 29 starts in his two-year UK career, posting 12 wins.
Mason Katz, LSU (Sr., Harahan, La.)
Has been the leader of the LSU baseball program’s outstanding community service effort in 2012-13 … Participates in children’s hospital visits in the Baton Rouge area, meeting with patients and their families while signing autographs, posing for pictures and lifting their spirits … Has visited Baton Rouge schools for “Read Across America” Day, encouraging students to expand their education through reading … Participated in the Buddy Walk in Baton Rouge – the event is conducted to promote awareness and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome … Also attended the Blue Ribbon Soiree to raise funds in the fight against prostate cancer … Annually takes part in the Halloween “Boozar” at LSU, as he and his teammates distribute candy to children in the local community … Served food to the homeless at Thanksgiving, and volunteered at the Baton Rouge Food Bank … Has helped to conduct youth baseball clinics throughout south Louisiana, and has worked as a volunteer with the Miracle League, a non-competitive baseball offering for children with physical or mental disabilities.
Tanner Bailey, Ole Miss (Sr., Little Rock, Ark.)
Read to local elementary school children through the Reading with the Rebels program … Coordinated registration for the Dash for Hash 5K run, providing directions and walking with children during the run … Volunteered at the Briarwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Summer Center, spending time with and entertaining residents … Has participated in various baseball clinics, providing lessons and instruction to youth … Helped with the SEC Canned Food Drive … Made visits to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
Luis Pollorena, Mississippi State (Sr., Laredo, Texas)
Participant in the MSU M-Club's annual "Bully's Book Blitz" campaign promoting reading among local elementary school students … Guest speaker to youth groups at the "Fifth Quarter" program at the Starkville First United Methodist Church … As a survivor of childhood cancer is an active participant and frequent speaker on campus and in the community at cancer awareness events … A volunteer for the promotion of reading during the Starkville Junior Auxiliary's campaign at Sudduth Elementary School … Joined MSU coaches and athletes serving breakfast to elementary school students participating in the M-Club's "Breakfast of Champions" campaign … Shared his faith and life experiences on television as a guest on the syndicated Tammie Tubbs Show.
Patrick Quintanilla, Missouri (So., Southlake, Texas)
Participated in the Food Recovery Network, working with Missouri dining services to take left-over food from dining halls to local soup kitchens … Volunteered with the CASA Heart of Missouri Youth Clinic.
Patrick Sullivan, South Carolina (Sr., Columbia, S.C.)
Co-chair of the 2011 Carolina Clemson Blood Drive by the American Red Cross … Worked with Better World Books for the last three years collecting books and donations throughout campus … Volunteers at two different elementary schools and with the Palmetto Baseball Youth Baseball League … Has been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll each year of his career at South Carolina … Is a member of the Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Med Honor Society and a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars … Received the Life Scholarship … Named to the Dean’s List three times as well as the President’s List once.
Dalton Saberhagen, Tennessee (Jr., Calabasas, Calif.)
Played a critical role in helping the Volunteer baseball program win the Big Orange Cup at the 2013 Volscars, which is presented to the University of Tennessee team that participates in the most community service events over the school year … Handed out candy and interacted with local children during UT’s annual “VOLoween” trick-or-treat festivities and also participated in a Halloween event at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital … He and his teammates later took part in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk to pay tribute and bring hope to those battling blood cancer … Volunteered with the local chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters at a special movie night for kids … Assisted at a free youth baseball clinic and later held a headshaving event, raising over $3,000 for the Vs. Cancer Foundation and East Tennessee Children’s Hospital … Saberhagen and the Vols hosted a clinic for the Knoxville Challenger League, which allows youngsters with special needs to play their favorite sports.
Troy Stein, Texas A&M (Jr., Castroville, Texas)
Helped spearhead the baseball team’s annual Aggie Paint-a-thon where the squad spends the day painting, doing yard work and performing minor home repairs for an elderly and disabled household … Helped organize SAAC’s Film-on-the-Field in which the student athletes host activities for children prior to showing a full-length film on the jumbotron at Kyle Field … Involved with Aggies Can Food Drive run by Texas A&M SAAC, for three years, that collected over $30,000 and over 5000 pounds of cans last year … Organized the FCA’s Caroling for Cans/Trick-or-Treating for Cans the last three years … Volunteered to help operate after-school educational activities at an elementary school in Bryan, Texas … Involved with Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Texas A&M Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Connor Harrell, Vanderbilt (Sr., Houston, Texas)
